Do You Also Feel Guilty When Craving Muffins? Are They Emotional Cravings?

Do You Also Feel Guilty When Craving Muffins? Are They Emotional Cravings?

Guess what? Me too. But mine are not emotional cravings. How can you tell?

Don’t get me wrong, I love sweets and I eat sweets. My husband always makes fun of me when we go out for dinner because I will order an appetizer and save room for dessert. Not to mention rushing through it so I can get to the dessert faster.

And I am okay with that. I know to distinguish between emotional cravings and pure pleasure and I balance it off.

I am not here to tell you

“craving muffins or any kind of dessert is WRONG and you should never do that cause you will gain weight and get sick”

NO.

I am here to tell you – DO IT!

But know the difference and balance it off. Don’t do it just because you “feel like it” which more often means emotional cravings.

How can you know the difference between emotional cravings and pure pleasure?

Ask yourself

“Is this something I need right now? Or I am only eating it to avoid pain, avoid a situation, avoid a certain truth?”

If you are eating it to numb the sadness or pain – that is emotional cravings. If you are eating it because you feel awesome and it will deliver you pure pleasure and zero guilt – that is what you want!

How can you balance it off?

  • Know your number. How many times a week do you need it for pure pleasure? (you might need it daily as an emotional escape…but for pure pleasure maybe only once a week or 2-3 times a week – know the difference!)
  • Know your body. As women, we experience 4 different phases each month, when we secrete certain hormones in different quantities. By knowing this, you can get to understand your cravings better and have more compassion towards yourself. My husband knows there are certain days each month when I eat more sweets and he always provides it for me without making me feel guilty…
  • How is your overall lifestyle? Do you exercise? What do you eat on a daily basis? If you eat a balanced meal, if you eat fruits and vegetables daily and you exercise a few times a week…you are entitled to your muffins! Life is made to be enjoyed!
